About the Artist Sonia Welford (b. 1975, Poland) is a London-based visual and abstract painter working primarily with mixed media on canvas. Her practice explores human emotion, identity, and inner narratives through layered abstraction. Rooted in memory, imagination, and emotional states, her works unfold instinctively on canvas, creating compositions that invite quiet reflection and personal interpretation. Born in Poland, Welford moved to London as a young adult and later spent nearly a decade in New Zealand, where she developed her artistic practice and completed a diploma in interior design. She returned to London in 2023 and currently lives and works there. Artistic Practice Welford’s early work developed through a muted, monochromatic palette with a strong sensitivity to texture. Her series “Finding Emotions” draws from personal memories and feelings, forming the foundation of her practice. Through layered brushstrokes and experimental surface treatments, she developed a distinctive visual language that conveys atmosphere and psychological depth without relying on colour. Her practice continues to evolve through expressive line work and the gradual introduction of colour. In the ongoing “Thoughts” series, Welford draws inspiration from childhood scribbles , combining spontaneous markings with deliberate composition to create works that resemble visual streams of consciousness. Since 2021, Welford has further developed her work through the incorporation subtle three-dimensional relief forms on canvas. These geometric structure interact with light and shadow, introducing a sculptural dimension that shifts the relationship between painting, object, and space. Through this evolving visual language, Welford's work continues to investigate the connection between emotion, material, and perception.
