The Rain Was Falling Slow (2026)
ON VIEW AT C O L L E C T I O N S 20-22 AUGUST 2026 FITZROVIA, LONDON |
C O L L E C T I O N S Opening August 20th 2026 @3pm 65a Charlotte St. Fitzrovia London Exhibition Statement Collections brings together eight artworks exploring memory, light, and the quiet complexities of human experience. Created between Welford's studio in New Zealand and her practice in London, the exhibition reflects an evolving artistic journey shaped by personal experience and reflection. Working through layering, scraping, erasure, and construction, Welford creates monochromatic paintings and reliefs that shift with changing light and the viewer's perspective. Each work carries the history of its making, inviting moments of stillness, contemplation, and personal interpretation. More than a presentation of artworks, Collections offers a space to pause, reflect, and discover meaning through subtle forms, shadows, and silence. From the Artist Collections is a journey through the things we gather throughout a lifetime — memories, experiences, wisdom, love and loss. Life is constantly changing, often in ways we neither expect nor choose. We carry these changes with us: moments of joy and fear, the people we have loved, the things we have lost, and the experiences that quietly shape who we become.Through my work, I explore these fragments of life through texture, mark-making, layers, shadow and form. Each work holds something different — a feeling, a memory, a question, or perhaps something that cannot be expressed through words.I invite the viewer not simply to look at the work, but to experience it. I want the work to create a sense of movement and vibration, where colour, texture, light and physical presence can evoke something personal in each viewer. The works reveal themselves gradually, encouraging us to pause, look closer and perhaps connect with our own memories and emotions.Because art can be more than something we see. It can evoke something we have forgotten, awaken something we have felt, or touch something within us that has no words.Ultimately, Collections is a collection of emotions — gathered through life, carried within us, and translated into art. Thank you for visiting Collections. I hope you found a moment of stillness, connected with the work, and discovered something of your own within it. Sonia Welford |
